Introducing IPBWI 3
Users of IPBWI 2 have frequently asked why there hasn’t been a release of IPBWI compatible with IPB 3.x. Here’s some background:

  1. Invision Power have made fundamental changes to the architecture of IPB. As a result IPBWI for IPB 3.x had to be built largely from the ground up to be compatible with the new architecture. This means it has taken time to redesign, rebuild, and test each of the IPBWI methods. An upshot of this is that is has allowed for IPBWI to more tightly integrate with the IPB core, creating a smaller IBPWI library with better compatibility.
  2. Despite several requests, Invision Power hasn’t provided any developer level support or information to this project. E.g. Access to information such as developer documentation, etc, would make development of IPBWI easier. Unfortunately we’ve had to go without.
  3. Time: As a free Open Source project, IPBWI development is currently supported only through community donations. The reality is I’ve had to focus on paid development work over development of IPBWI given the amount of time necessary to rewrite IPBWI to be compatible with IPB 3.x.

That’s been the situation until recently…

A few months ago Ian Wood of Total Environment Media approached me about continuing development of IPBWI to make it compatible with IPB 3.x as they’d like to be able to offer IPB 3.x compatibility to their clients. With their support I was able to refuse other jobs and concentrate my time on IPBWI.

Now: Total Environment has invested enough to reach IPBWI Top Sponsor Status and bring about the first beta of IPBWI 3.0! So let’s thank Total Environment for their support of IPBWI as an Open Source project, because the results are now available to everyone for free. IPBWI is Licensed under the GPL v3 - everyone is able to use IPBWI to connect to IP.board 3. That’s the spirit of open - and free - source.

There is actually no estimate when IPBWI 3.0 is done for IP.board 3.0

Tuesday, May 19th, 2009

Many Users of IPBWI are really hungry for getting an IPBWI version compatible with IP.board 3.0.

As I announced in this topic, I plan to make this version available asap, but there are some reasons why this version has not high priority at the moment:

  1. IP.board 3.0 release has RC1 status now, which means it isn’t completely finished now. There is no guarantee that some core parts will not have heavy code changes till release.
  2. IPBWI 2.0 has still many users which need support and bugfixes. Actually I have to prior my short time to this users.
  3. Invisionpower has some new features and mods which could make some parts from IPBWI 2.0 needless. With IP.converge and a wordpress-integration mod there are some projects from invisionpower which could save much work for me when I could use them as basis for my work on IPBWI 3.0

Anyway, every helping hand in developing for IPBWI is welcome. Please contact me, if you want to support the IPBWI project. Please note, that IPBWI as Software is opensource, GPL licensed and non-profit.

Kind regards,

Matthias
